There's varnish, there's gesso, and then there's Paint. This is the Paint: fine-grained and consistent, with great 'covering' properties.Gesso (white, opaque) is good for 'extending' a shade -- making 'more' of it, while preserving the color; it's almost as if the color 'coated' the particles in the gesso, rather than blending with them.Varnish, even when 'white', tends to ride on top of the paint, enhancing contrast (getting into 'pores' in the surface?), but also adding glare and 'grey-ness'.This titanium white 'blends' well (even when added to gesso to raise the 'gloss'), thins well (with water or with vernish), covers well (a very thin layer will cover even water-wet ultramarine, with no bleed-through), and 'draws' well (with the knife), due to its 'heavy body' composition. All in all, a good addition to the palette, as are other shades by the same manufacturer.
