This is one of those products that makes you smile - the quality is outstanding. The line it produces is smooth, variable, everything you want in a brush pen. Amazon categorizes it as a "toy" - it isn't.I assume the cap will keep it from drying out. If not, I'll post a follow up.

If you don't mind using water based inks which run and smudge and are very fragile in general, this is a fantastic pen. However, if you like to use your own waterproof inks, or a special brand of ink, look elsewhere. It's a real shame that such a fine pen is hindered by the lack of a simple tiny piece of plastic, which could easily be mass produced with this pen. I guess it is Kuretake's desire to sell ink refills is too large to allow it. At the bare minimum, if this is their need, they could also sell some waterproof inks in addition to the water-based line. Although i'm going to like my own inks more, every time.I lucked out and managed to get a Sailor Profit Brush pen, which is no longer being made (sad to say), which allows the use of my own inks and is a dream come true. It even has a better build quality than the Kuretake. Some people say they have managed to pair the Kuretake with some Lamy Ink converters with some success, but results vary if you search around the web. This pen would easily be a 5 with an ink converter. I gave it a 4, as it is a very good quality pen with a quality brush and some may not care about the lack of waterproof inks.

Recently I have been investigating really great new pens. I quite enjoyed using this pen and added on a Lamy 24 Converter that sorta fits well, and I can use India ink with the pen for all sorts of great new sketches.Definitely a good purchase.Al

As an illustrator, this serves as an valuable tool in my arsenal of pens and brushes. It's my go to toy when starting a new project. But with that being said, I'm already looking to buy a third one within a year and a half. Now perhaps the blame is on me for not cleaning it weekly, but I feel I use it often enough that it shouldn't have to be cleaned so often.

I researched all of the brush pen's on the market, and it came down to the Kuretake Sumi pen and the Pentel pen. I bought both, but I use the Kuretake brush pen almost exclusively (the Pentel is in my travel case).

I bought this calligraphy brush pen for a student who is studying Chinese in college. She found it to be excellent. She seems quite pleased with it and sent me a thank you note in Chinese characters using the pen.

While i don't think the Kuretake brush pen can replace my inking when it comes to full length projects, it is the best tool i have found in a long time. I can take it with me wherever i go and still ink from my sketchbook. It makes nice fluid lines,(don't go too fast as the ink needs some time to flow and you will have a faded line)and it can vary from extremely thin to extremely thick. The brush keeps a nice tip and is very versatile. I have had no problems with this brush pen and recommend it to anyone looking to ink on the go. Its portability allows me to practice much more often while maintaining the feel of a brush.

East meets West with this multipurpose fusion of pen and brush. As the other reviewers have already stated there undying "love" for this pen. I too find myself a loyal subject. Since this was my first ever blended-hair brush pen I really had no knowledge, experience and/or expectations. However the raving reviews fueled my need to purchase. As it travelled to its final destination I worried...Did I pay too much?...Are there better pens out there?...Will I like the ink?...Do I have to pay the return shipping fee?...And mostly...if there is no ink converter and I hate the ink???First off this pen is a dream. The ink is a deep, rich, smooth, matte black. I have used it on various surfaces (sumi, marker, watercolor, etc. Paper) all with sensational results. Because the tip is strands of individual hairs and not a felt tip (like typical brush markers) the pen is very similar to a watercolor brush in strand and diameter, yet shorter by half in actual brush length. The diameter being close to the size of a #2 or # 3 paint brush (0.2 cm). The length of just the brush is 0.9 cm (total length 13.5 cm) which allows a greater control for details, drawing and calligraphy. I am a sumi-e hobbyist and was looking for a travel/detail pen to sketch with. I use to use my brush tip markers but never could get that brush-like look. With this pen I can get the textures and strokes that are unique to hair brushes and the control and convenience of a pen. I now use the pen for many things, including but not limited to, miniature sumi-e paintings, adding fine details to my larger paintings and even for writing. AND NOW FOR THOSE OF YOU WANTING TO SKIP ANOTHER RAVING REVIEW....INK CONVERTER IS AVAILABLE.It's called the Platinum Fountain Pen Converter and I found it on "Jetpens" (I check with Amazon cuts.svc. If I could say this since the site adver. w/Amazon). So don't shy way from this pen if that is a concern. You can now have your pen and your ink too.

The instant I tried this pen I fell in love with it. It is absolutely fantastic. The few complaints I've read are about the ink, but personally I've found the ink to be fine. I've gone through a number of different inks over the past couple of years, including Higgins grey swill and, most recently, a bottle of sumi ink. The Kuretake ink is a good solid black which dries very quickly. I haven't had it smear. It isn't waterproof, but I don't usually draw in the rain. It dries perfectly flat and matte, unlike the sumi ink which is a little glossy and sits on top of the paper (not that that's necessarily a bad thing). It's probably against Amazon policy to link to my page showing what I've done with the pen, but if you Google my name and "Kuretake" it should show up, and you can read my longer and more glowing review.
