Although it's hard to tell for sure, it seems like the pen does a good job at identifying acid-free and acidic paper. I tested it on a few envelopes from mailers I had received and was surprised to see they weren't acidic. I thought acid-free was less common and made things more expensive.After trying it on the few pieces of mail I had handy, I tried it on some of my journals that I thought should have acid-free papers. The journals came back as acid free, so now, I was on a quest to find at least something that was acidic. I came across an old Harry Potter book we had. The pages were thin and had yellowed with age. If this didn't turn out as acidic, what would? I tried the pen on the pages of the book, and sure enough, the results showed that the pages were acidic.So, for an unscientific test, it seems like the pen does what it says. It seems like book pages are often acidic from the various books I tested. For journals that have pages like a book, the pen test is an added assurance that the pages are high quality and acid free.

This is a little gadget that I'd never think of looking for if I hadn't run into it on Amazon.com. I am happy to have it in my tool stash because I use diverse media in my crafting. I tried it on several items labeled acid-free and others making no claim at all. The "acid free" items I tested were truly acid free. But others also came up acid free despite making no such claims. I was surprised. But sadly other products failed the acid test and should not be used in projects I want to last a hundred years or more. I also plan to use the handy pen to test a trunk-full of inherited ancestral photo albums and journals. This would reveal whether the photos should be reprinted or moved to a for-sure acid free album. Perhaps the journals should be translated to digital format or copied to acid free paper.I have a hunch this little pen will make me a more responsible paper crafter and memory keeper.
