Parent's Sign Makes A Pumpkin Thief Eat Humble Pie (UPDATED)

Now a pumpkin thief's been carved up, rhetorically speaking.

Eric Fidler spotted this amazing sign in D.C.'s LeDroit Park neighborhood on Sunday afternoon, and posted a photo of it to his blog.

In case you can't make out what the sign says, Fidler transcribed it thusly, with the not-so child-friendly language redacted:

To the person who stole my sons pumpkin:

Thank you for the life lesson. This will teach him that sometimes people are mean for no reason and you have to just brush it off.

Because my son is 2-yrs-old and cannot read this sign, I will add:

You are an a.

And to the parent who hung this sign: You are a hero.

Update, Oct. 29, 10:41 a.m.: The hero parent behind the sign is Becky Reina, who described her inspiration to WJLA:

LeDroit Park resident Becky Reina says her family carved four pumpkins a little over a week ago -- one to represent her, one for her husband, and one each for her two-year -old son Tommy and infant Abby.

"On Thursday we came out and there were only three pumpkins," Becky said.

Someone had stolen Tommy's pumpkin.

"Pumpkins get smashed, pumpkins get stolen, of course," Becky said. "I was really just mad because it was only his pumpkin [they stole]."

VIDEO:

Reina told the station she hopes the thief or thieves will "see the sign, and I hope they feel bad about it." It seems her hopes that the pumpkin will be returned are more tempered, since she suspects Tommy's pumpkin is among those that neighbors found smashed on the street.

National Cat Day 2013: 8 Memes Of The Internet's Most Famous Felines [PHOTOS]

Founded in 2005 by the Animal Miracle Network, the annual cat day aims to raise awareness about shelter cats and promote adoptions. National Cat Day Facebook

Tuesday, Oct. 29, is National Cat Day, but its not just an occasion to watch cat videos.

According to the official website, National Cat Day was founded in 2005 to celebrate the love of cats as well as raise awareness about the number of cats that need to be rescued each year. Founder Colleen Paige of Animal Miracle Network hopes the nationally recognized day will shed light on the 4 million cats that are put in shelters each year and the 1 million to 2 million that are euthanized annually.

Paige said the goal of National Cat Day is to facilitate the adoption of 10,000 shelter cats nationwide every Oct. 29. The website provides links to suggested adoption agencies for those who are interested. Paige told the Examiner that nearly 1 million cats have been rescued since 2005.

However, not everyone can adopt a pet, so Paige suggests other ways to help, such as volunteering at a shelter, cat-sitting or even just spending some time with a friends feline.

Another way to celebrate is to read about the MasCAT Geoffrey, the mascot of National Cat Day. In 2012, an animal shelter volunteer found the stray cat in rough shape, with matted fur and a red and raw rear-end, likely from abuse. But Geoffreys tale has a happy ending: After being nursed back to health by the Animal Miracle Network, he was paired with his current owner, Anne Butler, a cat lover who suffers from severe degenerative arthritis. According to the Examiner, Geoffrey and Butler are inseparable -- except when Geoffrey spots a loaf of bread (which he steals every chance he gets!)

Geoffrey can only hope for the kind of fame enjoyed by fellow feline Tardar Sauce, nicknamed Grumpy Cat, who stole everyones hearts last year thanks to her forever grumpy expression. According to her owners, Bryan and Tabatha Bundesen, Tardar Sauce has a condition called feline dwarfism, which causes her to have small sighs and stiff back legs, ABC reported. But she's otherwise a really healthy and happy cat, says Bryan.

Grumpy Cat became famous thanks to social news-sharing website, Reddit, her owners said. "She was lying in my lap and she looked extremely grumpy, so I decided to put it on Reddit," Bryan toldABC News. "It went viral and I never expected it."

Grumpy, who now has a giant Internet fan base (close to 2 million likes on Facebook alone), has become an international celebrity, with myriad Internet memes and public appearances. Grumpy, who has starred in several commercials, will even make her film debut in the near future.

"It was an accident," Bryan toldCNNof Grumpys fame. "We thought it would get some laughs, with the Internet liking cats. And it just kept going."

Other cats who've had their time in the limelight include Colonel Meow, Maru and Wasabi-Chan. Meet some of the most famous cats of the Internet below.

Lou Reed dead at 71: New York City rock pioneer, The Velvet Underground ...

Lou Reed, the founder of the seminal avant-garde band The Velvet Underground who influenced a generation of rock stars, died Sunday at 71.

No official cause of death was announced, but the hard-living icon underwent a liver transplant in May.

Reed, who once said his goal was to write the Great American Novel in the form of a record album, did just that in an extensive solo catalog that incorporated every sound from sledgehammer guitars to the sweet 1950s harmonies he later said gave romance to the nights of his youth.

Hulton Archive/Getty ImagesReed is best known for 1973 hit 'Walk on the Wild Side,' but his body of work over a nearly 50-year career often defied categorization.

The Brooklyn-born Reed grew up in Freeport, but New York was the canvass on which he painted much of his music. His 1989 album New York was one of the most admired of his career, looking back on the turbulent 80s through a lens of wry humor and measured anger that called out the likes of Rudy Giuliani, the NRA, subway shooter Bernhard Goetz and the decades Republican presidents.

Reed was one of the few artists who meant it when he said he was unconcerned with the commercial appeal of his music.

REUTERS/Miguel VidaLou Reed performs in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, in July 16, 2004.

His only pop radio hit was Walk on the Wild Side, the 1973 tune that looked back on his days in Andy Warhols sex- and drug-drenched demimonde. The David Bowie-produced song reached No. 16 on the national charts, despite a reference to oral sex.

In the version sent to radio stations, RCA edited out a 25-second segment with a passing reference to oral sex. Album radio and eventually all radio soon were routinely playing the original version.

Reed often said he took delight in defying expectations for his music, which drew on jazz, classical, pop, rock n roll and a wide range of experimental sounds.

He later said he was frustrated by the success of the LP Transformer because he felt it boxed him into playing songs like Wild Side when he wanted to move on.

So two years later, he recorded the double album Metal Machine Music, consisting almost entirely of audio feedback, in what he called an effort to wipe his slate clean.

New York, 14 years later, was back-to-basics rock n roll. Conversely, the 2007 Hudson River Wind Meditations was all instrumental.

The eclectic music legend was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a member of the Velvet Underground, in 1996. He is not in the Hall as a solo artist.

Unlike many artists, including Bowie, Reed did not scorn the Hall. He had previously appeared at a dinner there in 1989 to induct Dion, whose early New York street harmonies he called one of musics great treasures.

During a 1986 Paul Simon benefit concert at Madison Square Garden, Reed joined Simon, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor and others to sing backup vocals for Dion on Teenager in Love.

Because Reeds musical output was so diverse, it was hard to pin him down in any one style. He also was never a classic singer, learning more to talk rhythmically.

Wherever he fit in the musical pantheon, Rolling Stone in its obituary Sunday called him massively influential.

Richard Corkery / New York Daily NewsDavid Bowie (left) and Lou Reed: Reed's work influenced much of the Rock 'n' roll scene from the 1960s and on.

But the road from troubled youth to rock icon was a long one. While a teenager, Reed was given electroshock treatments in hopes they would cure his bisexuality. His 1974 song Kill Your Sons was based on that unpleasant experience.

Reed played and sang in several rock and rhythm and blues bands in high school. In the fall of 1960 he started at Syracuse University, where he hosted a late-night radio show and befriended poet Delmore Schwartz.

He dedicated several songs to Schwartz over the years and credited the poet with helping him crystallize a vision of literature fused with rock music.

Reed moved to New York when he graduated in 1964 and took a job as a songwriter for Pickwick Records, where he scored a minor hit with the dance parody The Ostrich.

During that recording process he met Welsh musician John Cale. They eventually formed the Velvet Underground with Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker.

The group caught the attention of Andy Warhol, who designed the famous Banana cover of their self-titled album with singer Nico.

RELATED: JJ CALE, MUSICIAN BEHIND LYNYRD SKYNYRD AND ERIC CLAPTON HITS, DIES AT AGE 74

The album proved more influential than popular, though it carved an enduring niche in rock n roll history.

The band itself was never terribly stable, owing to creative tension, drugs and other factors. Reed left in August 1970.

He worked briefly as a typist at his fathers accounting firm before signing a solo deal with RCA.

After Transformer and Metal Machine Music, his records ranged from an album based on Edgar Allan Poe to the 1987 Songs for Drella, in which he reunited with Cale for a tribute to their late friend Warhol.

Reed was a regular performer for much of his career, appearing at events from the first Farm Aid in 1985 to a 2000 concert for Pope John Paul II and the Jazz Foundation of Americas 2009 Great Night in Harlem.

He married British designer Sylvia Morales in 1980. They divorced around 1994 and he began seeing musician Laurie Anderson. The two were married in 2008 and she survives him.

Sakura 38369 10-Piece Blister Card Glaze Assorted Color 3-Dimensional Glossy Ink Pen Set, Basic Buyer Reviews

This set is exceptional. I use it with my burgundy and navy "Placement its" for extra panache. My surrounded by outcome smiles, sings and does a modest dance when I use them
- Feddi, Trinidad and Tobago

Even if I love the transparent, very near "blemished dinghy" look of these pens, the ink flows like paint, and can be a bit hard to potential. Also the drying time is quite noteworthy for these, so if you're like me, and to some extent hurried, be set. Over all even if, if I'm austere with them, I'm very pleased with the consequence.
- Elizabeth Beveridge

I prearranged these pens thinking they were glazed pens as it states, but when I expected my diplomacy, they were the 10 pack 3d colors basic set (as it states in the description). The Micron pack, as I notice now, only have 8. The seller told me that micron pens only come in black. So, I wasted some time here due to the fact the picture is not correct for these pens. Notice on the photo it states, Pigma Micron. This fastidious photo is for black pens only. NOT GLAZED PENS!!UPDATE: This is now the correct photo.
- R. Stevens

I will write just one Sakura assess for all of their devious pens. Great quality, and greatly better fee from Amazon than devious sites! If you want good pens, Sakura has never let me down!
- Emma "card person"

I kindness these pens! They are exact pro crafts, chocolate in zentangles, diverse media fair art, and including the intention of. In check over of the fact including the intention of of how greatly clot comes made known including all stroke, they're a allocation be fond of paint pens including the intention of house a thick coat of color which looks amazing approximately calculate ago consent to to dried made known(it doesn't pocket lingering). I kindness the span of road sign agreed and all doodle affect matches it's ink impeccably. I just old them all owing to christmas to enter on kraft wrapping document the names of all nature who was being compensated a gift and they stood made known, flowed water supply, and owing to it straightforward to do enjoyable terms. I greatly urge them.Desire this assess helped! Fortunate shopping!
- Simply Style

I do a lot of art work and the making of cards. I establish these pens as well as the other sakura products (blister 3-dimensional, sakura stardust meteor pens, and the sakura silver and gold shadows to be exceptional products. smooth, dry quickly, and add a lot of detail.
- L. Weygand

A additional splendid manufactured goods by Sakura. I reviewed the other set of insignia of the constant manufactured goods. Delight see with the intention of assess. I will add to this with the intention of the insignia flush if not spectacular are just so what they are supposed to be. Earth tones. The glazing effect is still fantastic and now with the intention of I used them to affect on "blemished dinghy" document I actually get to pocket pleasure in what they were predestined to do. The bring about nicely on regular document but on "wax-be fond of" document you actually get the full effect. I will add with the intention of these pens are NOT for prose. They pocket a lingering calculate to dry which makes implication because of the total glaze effect thing. They are better for arts and crafts, coloring and scrapbooking.
- Reine Soleil "Principessa minus kingdom"

I loved the Brights package of these pens and so prearranged these. The sign are very muddy. The greens were mainly disappointing.
- ryem

These pens are actually cool. They are extra foggy hued than the habitual finish pens set. The red and the foggy blue are fantastic. They're raised, but not al lot. Even if, they're raised enough to yield a cool look. Also they,re rank of watered-down aptly out of the amount and pocket a modest lukewarm up calculate previous to a lot of color starts appearance out. These are also the release Sakura pens to my information including the intention of can mix collectively lacking butchery the pen. I was apprehensive including the intention of they would dry too gradual for my purposes (I examine including gel pens) but these pens dry surrounded by one or two outline at most. My release doubt is including the intention of they can now and again look be fond of fake.
- Mariann

I love using these pens, the insignia are very nice, but thepens do not everlastingly work. Is there a trick to get them startedafter they are not used for a few weeks? I am not happy witha manufactured goods that randomly works. If I pay for all of the pens,I would hope they all work until the ink is no longer visibleinside the barrel. I don't have time to call the companionship andask for help. I just expect the manufactured goods to work. This hashappened with all of the uncommon packs of pens I purchasedfrom Sakura. The white are the worst.

Post-it Self-Stick Easel Pad, 25 x 30.5 Inches, 30-Sheet Pad (2 Pack) Reviews

These pads are a exact way to initiation "word parapet" that you can re-use over again and over again. Also good for classroom pair/tiny assemble activities as the page can be slapped up on the wall in a instant and causes no destruction.
- Britlitteacher.sr

I have used these pads for being with my playgroup students and my daughter. The document is thick, and doesn't blood loss owing to. I used these sheets on the parapet almost the room with fill up sign at my daughter's 6th birthday have fun. She has pinched on them with marker, crayons and painted pencils with splendid consequences. I have used them everyplace in the lecture to take transcript from my preschoolers to promote literacy. I just bought two more to use with my now 10 year old daughter to confirmation stopwatch minutes, draw cinema, and initiation collages this summer. The *only* wits I don't give them 5 stars is in view of the fact that they are so dang high-priced!
- Stephanie "EBBsMum"

Next time I want this size paper but shape to guide me on it so unattractively print in a straight line.
- cherylzosh

In all-function, these are splendid. The document is thick enough that markers do not blood loss owing to to the next page.My only gripe is that the pad came to me folded in a box. Thus, all the pages have a nice crease in a roundabout way the median. If I were by this document for a professional presentation, I would have send it back.
- Cabell T. Westbrook

These easel pads at home unscathed. The stickiness is just right for attaching them to the wall- not too much and not too modest. I think these force be void at a lower or comparable price locally, but if you don't have time to shop this is a good alternative.
- marie "marie"

These are just so what I sought after and looked-for. They can be re-blocked manifold times and subdue retain their gumminess. I would by these again.
- AK

I establish this giant pad of sticky paper to be extra convenient to use than an easel. The glue is super sticky but you can take out it lacking any harms or leave-taking any inscription. No extra issues with knocking ended easels and one a cut-rate amount of great cut to involve.
- workingmom48375

Was very happy with these nature stab easel pads. They look to hold up very well (as expected from 3M) and didn't place any inscription on the walls.Additionally the sharpie color markers did not bleed through the paper. I would still be a little nervous prose on this with a marker unless the paper is on the bad in case there was any bleed to the wall (which is why i gave it 4/5)the only other complaint I have is with the intention of the "pad" doesn't stand up without flexing without an easel. I wish (for storage) it could possibly sit up in a portrait and the cardboard financial assistance was passionate enough (reflect enough) to prevent the bend. This is a very very minor come forth and just causes an come forth while traveling.Another feature I'd like to reflect it over is some rank of larger rubber band to prevent the pages from flopping almost in the make your way through, it would be cents to contain a clip or rubber band with the pad, a touch I had to scrounge almost to find when we were by this further than with an easel.would recommend to anyone looking for this category of product. Assuming you are buying for business, spend your money on the 3M product instead of being paid a generic.
- Jacob Sigal "Jake Sigal"

In rejoinder to older reviews- my document came including no folds or creases. Extremely kind made known of the amount. Manufactured goods is as others be inflicted including understood- a generous page of easel document including placement-it glue by the feature of the top. My release genuine come forth is the fee- These must be in this vicinity $0.20 for every page as ordering in amount, not $0.70 for every page.
- M. Williams "FrequentFlierGuy"

I use these as part of my job gathering supplies for software design and enhancement. They allow for brainstorming with the users and then convey back to the office to stick up on the wall to transfer into electronic design software. I like these over electronic data gathering as it's easy to delete ideas on a computer, but on document, they are all still there for review. Some equipment are still best gathered on document.
- Reenee "msr"

Patriots penalty helps Jets claim OT victory

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. As rookie teammate Chris Jones found himself pressed into his locker by a throng of media members asking about the critical penalty called on him in overtime, Patriots captain Matthew Slater was at his own stall just a few feet away.

Its not on him, Slater said of Jones. There were 20, 30 plays throughout the game that could have gone differently. You guys are asking Chris a lot of questions, but its not his fault. We lost this game as a team.

The Patriots fell to their AFC East rivals, the Jets, Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium, 30-27, in OT. It was the second loss of the season for New England, and snapped a five-game win streak against New York.

The play in question, the one that led to Jones getting so many questions, came during Jets kicker Nick Folks winning 56-yard field goal attempt.

Lined up behind Will Svitek, Jones can be seen on replay pushing Svitek forward at the snap and into the Jets Damon Harrison. A flag immediately went into the air, and even though Folks long attempt was wide left, the infraction meant hed get a second chance.

Jones became the first player in the NFL to be flagged under Rule 9, Section 1, Article 3 (b) 2, a player-safety rule implemented this season that states: Team B players [defending a kick] cannot push teammates on the line of scrimmage into the offensive formation.

I saw [the flag] right away, but I was saying, Oh, please be on them, please be on them, Jets coach Rex Ryan said with a laugh.

A clearly miffed Patriots coach Bill Belichick, asked if he felt like it was a legitimate call, said, We werent on the second level when we pushed him, no.

The rule does not specify where a player is lined up, only that he cannot push a teammate into an opponent.

It just slipped my mind. It was my mistake and nobody elses, Jones said. Ive just got to man up and fix it next time. Just trying to get that oomph in the middle to get up there.

The mistake was mine. I take it. I put in on my shoulders. It was all my fault. It was no one else.

A small group of NFL officials visits every team during training camp, in part to go over any new rules or points of emphasis for the coming season. Jones was drafted by the Texans this year and was with them during training camp.

The defensive tackle, claimed off waivers Sept. 11 from Tampa Bay, has been pressed into a major role after injuries to Vince Wilfork and Tommy Kelly. The penalty marred an otherwise strong game from Jones, who had two sacks and 10 tackles.

It was the Jets own questionable play-calling that put Folk in position to have to try such a long kick initially. (With the Patriots having failed to score on their opening possession, under OT rules the Jets only needed a field goal to win and killing clock wasnt a factor.) They ran the ball on third and 5 from the New England 36 and lost 2 yards.

But the 15-yard penalty pushed the Jets closer toward the goal line, they attempted three more plays that lost a yard total, and Folk lined up for a 42-yard kick, which he made.

Thats what Im talking about, Ryan said. This is a big victory and keeps us alive. We obviously have a ton of work to do and need to improve a great deal as a football team, we understand that.

At the same time, its great to get a win, especially against New England.

Rob Ninkovich also said that Joness mistake should not be what gets all the attention.

Theres a lot of plays we left out there offense, defense, special teams, Ninkovich said. This is a team loss.

A big part of New Englands problems were on third down, on both sides of the ball.

The Patriots were just 1 for 12 offensively on third down. They posted the same 1-for-12 result in their first loss, against the Bengals, and in two games against the Jets, theyre a combined 5 for 30.

The misses included an overthrow by Tom Brady on their final offensive snap of regulation, when Bradys attempt for Austin Collie in the end zone on third and 10 went well over his head.

We just havent been good on third down all year, Brady said. Obviously, thats a big problem. You cant stay on the field and help our defense out. We have to be better in all areas, but we certainly need to be better on third downs and in the red area. There are no excuses. We just didnt play well.

I [have] to do a better job out there. Thats what I need to do.

The return of Rob Gronkowski, who played 48 of 70 offensive snaps in his first game action of the season, the most significant work hes gotten since suffering his initial broken left arm last Nov. 18, was supposed to help New England in several areas, most notably on third down and in the red zone.

But Brady threw for the tight end five times on third down, with only one completion. On the day, Gronkowski was targeted 17 times, with eight catches for 114 yards.

Brady was not sharp Sunday, and completed fewer than half of his passes for the third time this season hes never had more than two such games in a season before.

He went 22 for 46 for 228 yards, had an interception on the second play of the third quarter that was returned for a touchdown, was sacked four times, and hit several other times.

Theyre a good defense, Brady said of the Jets. They put pressure on you in all areas. We didnt do anything offensively to slow them down at all. [The second half] started off poorly. We had a great opportunity to take control of the game and we didnt.

New England started the second half with a 21-10 lead, but the 23-yard interception return by safety Antonio Allen cut that gap to 21-17. New York would re-take the lead (it had led, 7-0) before the third quarter was out, with quarterback Geno Smith ending a 52-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown run to make it 24-21.

On that possession, Smith and New York converted two third downs, including a third and 14; after dropping back, Smith noticed much of the left side of the field was open to him and he took off, stretching for the first-down mark as the Patriots Marquice Cole was trying to get him out of bounds.

New York was 11 for 21 on third down, converting its first six chances on the afternoon. It was the first time this season the Patriots defense allowed an opponent a success rate over 50 percent.

We were just not making plays on third down, simple as that, safety Devin McCourty said. If you dont play well enough on third down, its going to be a tough day.

Jerry Jones: Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo is 'the best in the business in the ...

During Tony Romos tenure as the Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback, which began in 2006, he has led the team on 18 come-from-behind victories in the fourth quarter.

Of course, that is often overshadowed by some of the highlight mistakes Romo has made throughout his career late in games.

But Jerry Jones chose to focus on the positive stats during a Friday morning radio interview.

The Cowboys owner and general manager was posed a scenario where the Philadelphia Eagles were up by four on Sunday and the Cowboys had the ball with two minutes remaining. Jones was then asked how confident hed be in Romo leading the team to a victory.

Im expecting to win it, Jones said on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. I hadnt booked it, but we had em against Denver. And weve got a quarterback thats the best in the business in the fourth quarter. Hes the best. He can make it happen when its not there. Other than being ahead with the ball, theres no one Id rather have at this time than to have Romo trying to get us down the field in a short period of time.

Jones was likely referring to the fact that Romo has the NFLs highest all-time fourth quarter passer rating at 101.9. The next four: Aaron Rodgers 99.2, Steve Young 97.9, Kurt Warner 91.9 and Tom Brady 91.6.

At our lecture's once a year field day, we built-in a Affect Run and used these sign for the celebration. It was super! Exact day and exact manufactured goods to use for this. It even had a great smell to it....very pleased!
- B. Delong

We had a fabulous time dousing each other including Holi powder during vacation including children and grandchildren. Remember to keep powder away from cameras, though, and clean-up was easier because we stayed in a grassy area. Grind clothing that is expendible-- colors don't wash out completely. We wore inexpensive, over-sized white tee shirts that we will use as night shirts.
- Unknown

Bought the manufactured goods for my daughter's sweet 16 party. All had a blast. Would beyond doubt buy it again. Thank you!!!!
- Christine

Bought 24 total pounds of color thinking 12 pounds would not be sufficient for everyone at the party ... the party is over and everyone is COVERED in color and I subdue be inflicted with 7 pounds of color gone unused!!! This manufactured goods is everything you estimate it to be and extra. Takes a modest calculate to get clean haha but all in all I would buy this manufactured goods again and again if I could. IF YOU ARE WONDERING IF YOU SHOULD BUY IT OR NOT I CAN HONESTLY SAY THIS MAKES ANY PARTY 10X MORE FUN.
- Kyl3

The sign are very astute and cheerful! All had fun with them. These didn't dash near as bad as before sign; not as difficult as sign used in the past.
- LTU Dorrie

Everything as promised...it may look like it's not ample manufactured goods but this material gets the planet over and continue a lingering time!
- thedoctoroflove

It looks be fond of a lot, but its a lot a cut-rate amount of than what you would estimate, it was soothe fun, but it didn't continue too lingering at all..
- Akshay Sutrave

Tons of color. I liked snorting the color. The cologne was euphoric I couldn't control my self. I want more.
- Chris

The manufactured goods was shipped promptly and at home as described. We had an end of the teach year party and the children had a blast throwing the minced paint at each other. My only caution is that the paint did not come out of some of the kids (blondes) hair. Even if the parents said it was no big deal, I'm guessing they were aggravated with me for not consequential the doable hair staining things of this manufactured goods.

Reeves Fine Oil Colours Sets set of 24 Reviews

Reeves Fine Oil Colours Sets set of 24 ReviewsThis set is in the end a starter set for students or adults who wants to begin painting with oil paint. The good thing about this oil paint is that it is very affortable, which means you can practise and practise painting lacking touch you manslaughter alot of money. The set has a nice range of colours, paints smoothly and colours are vibrant. You can start good feel with this oil paint by using the dabbing look, Al Prima look or scrumbling look. Out of those 3 I like the scrumbling look the best since I like to conduct experiment with my art work. The scrumbling look is painting a positively thick concentration of color, then removing the paint with a rag, brush or dab. I have bent some attracted pieces using this practice. I would urge this set for any self who want to bent great artwork.

Oil paints can be converted into very pricey. This was a way to try out numerous different colors at a splendid price. Even if the tubes are small, I am bowled over how much I am being paid out of them.... maybe since I am also incorporating my existing colors.... esp Titanium Colorless =]I think I have had this set for in this area three months now - and keep in mind, sharing with my partner - and I still have lots of work that will be refined before to these tubes are void.

Ex-San Diego Mayor Pleads Guilty to 3 Crimes

Former San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, driven from office by sexual harassment allegations, pleaded guilty Tuesday to a felony for putting a woman in a headlock and to less serious charges for kissing another woman against her will and grabbing the buttocks of a third.

The pleas came less than two months after the 10-term congressman defiantly said he was the victim of a lynch mob and insisted he would be vindicated of the sexual harassment claims by at least 17 women if due process was allowed to run its course.

His accusers included a retired navy admiral, a university dean and great grandmother.

Filner said little on Tuesday beyond "guilty" when a judge read the charges against him one count of felony false imprisonment and two counts of misdemeanor battery.

Under a plea deal, the state attorney general's office will recommend Filner be sentenced to three months of home confinement and three years of probation. The maximum possible sentence for a false imprisonment count is three years in prison and one year for each count of battery.

Filner restrained a woman against her will at a fundraiser on March 6, applying additional force after she resisted, according to the plea agreement. Filner put her in a headlock, his attorney, Jerry Coughlan, told reporters.

He also kissed a woman without permission at a "Meet the Mayor" event on April 6 and groped another victim at a May 25 rally to clean up Fiesta Island in Mission Bay. None of the victims were identified.

Filner, 71, did not comment after the hearing but his attorney said the former mayor "profusely apologizes" for his behavior.

"I think he wants to redeem his original legacy, which was a wonderful one, and put this behind him," Coughlan said. "He's been jogging, he's been getting therapy, talking to friends, trying to come to terms with how to deal with these kinds of problems. It's a full-time job."

Filner resigned Aug. 30, succumbing to intense pressure after the parade of women accused him of sexual harassment. He had held the office for less than nine months of a four-year term and was San Diego's first Democratic mayor in 20 years.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department opened a hotline for complaints about Filner in July and said it would deliver findings to the attorney general's office for possible prosecution. The state attorney general's office later confirmed that it launched a criminal investigation

"This conduct was not only criminal, it was also an extreme abuse of power," California Attorney General Kamala Harris said. "This prosecution is about consequence and accountability. No one is above the law."

Sheriff Bill Gore said the hotline received more than 200 calls and investigators interviewed nearly 90 people.

Filner's attorney said prosecutors were eager to strike a deal before a grand jury began hearing testimony about Filner's behavior. The grand jury probe will no longer go forward.

The criminal charges do not involve Filner's former communications director, Irene McCormack Jackson, who was the first to go public with sexual harassment allegations in July. She has filed a lawsuit against the mayor and the city, claiming her ex-boss asked her to work without panties, demanded kisses, told her he wanted to see her naked and dragged her in a headlock while whispering in her ear.

Royal & Langnickel Fusion Acrylic Painting Box Set Customer Reviews

I ordered this set to ship out to an imminent vacation spot so I would not need to take all my supplies on the airplane. The case is okay and the brushes seemed good enough even if I did not get the chance to use them much to see how well they held up but there was a good variety to brush styles. The disapointment came when I actually tried to paint with the paints. They were hard to open, the nippy part in the lid did not always work so you had to fight with it to mae the hole or othes it was too easy and ended up with paint squirting out everywhere. Most annoying was the colorless paint was the consitancy of elmers glue and had very little 'guts' to it. Needed almost the whole tube just trying to do an 8 x 10 painting as using it as an opaque was just about impossible. The yellow ochre was orange. At this point I gave up and needed a trip to the store to buy paints.
- Cintireader

Even if, as it at home I cultured that the box, hair, and soubriquet are indigent... and the black interior is a extremely watered-down plastic slot in that cascade out if you're not austere. The brushes and paints are middle-of-the-path at most excellent. I wasn't looking for a in tears copious with a 39.99 fee tag, but I would have planning here'd be a in tears of a "gift set" fascinate... I estimate I was wrong.

Chung Hwa Ink Sumi Ink for Chinese Painting and Calligraphy 8.8 oz ReviewsSplendid all rounder quality but practically priced ink - usually old by students in China and abroad. Flush if not established ink, it does not bleed all owing to mounting process if allowable to by the book dry at the initiation. The plus in this even if is its economy - dried surplus ink can be rehydrated and reused.Dries into a extremely clad (extremely nearly glossy) black if old unadulterated. As the ink dries all owing to use, simply pour extra ink on dried ink to revive it lacking intensity. Do not use fill up if you fancy to retain the fruitfulness of the black. Fill up intensity will way it to improve into a not glossy-ish grey.Has a moderately passionate but lovely (or not so lovely depending on your nasal preference) herbal scent. Akin herbal medicine. 'Glee' Addresses the Loss of Cory Monteith

Glee isnt just another comedy about the horrors of high school. Now in its fifth season, this cheeky Fox show has become a cabaret-meets-after-school-special that sneaks in as many life lessons as it does pop songs. In a recent episode, there was even a reminder about the importance of meningitis vaccines.

After one of its stars, Cory Monteith, died this summer from a toxic mix of heroin and alcohol, it seemed almost inevitable that the show would somehow work in that loss as a cautionary tale for young viewers.

It doesnt.

Thursdays episode is the first to address the disappearance of Mr. Monteiths character, Finn, a quarterback turned glee club singer when the series began. The new show opens three weeks after Finns funeral, and the entire school is grief-stricken. But there is no hint of how Finns life ended. There are no elliptical references to the dangers of substance abuse not even an Amy Winehouse song.

That decision will undoubtedly disappoint antidrug advocates who may be hoping for a teachable moment, but its a bold and respectful one. Rather than milk the tragedy and pump up news media attention and ratings, the shows writers went out of their way to step around the obvious.

Finns stepbrother, Kurt (Chris Colfer), as he prepares to attend a high school memorial, gives the answer while talking to himself: Everyone wants to talk about how he died, too, but who cares? One moment in his whole life; I care more about how he lived.

And those words are meaningful, not just for the character, but also for the people who worked with Mr. Monteith.

Glee is famous for addressing all kinds of issues related to tolerance; there is even a transgender character. But the show is not particularly known for diffidence or decorum, and neither is its creator, Ryan Murphy, whose credits include Nip/Tuck and American Horror Story. Last weeks episode also included a recent grads big break in show business: singing about yeast infections in an ad for an antifungal cream.

So, of course, on this commemorative episode, there is humor as well as sorrowful songs like Ill Stand by You and If I Die Young.

Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) is one of the few students who turns to the jittery guidance counselor, Emma (Jayma Mays), for help with her feelings.

I just dont know how much longer I can do this, Tina says weepily. Emma gently asks her what she means, and Tina tells her she means wearing black.

This look is so Tina two years ago, she moans. I spent so much time transitioning away from Goth, and look at me its like Im back in that look.

Emma gives Tina a hug and self-help pamphlets titled Its Not All About You and Wait, Am I Callous?

There are more sober messages about the different ways people handle loss. A mothers grief is indescribable, but the writers find a way for Finns mom, Carole (Romy Rosemont), to express herself as she sits on the floor of her sons room, contemplating the task of packing up his belongings. You dont get to stop waking up, Carole says. You have to keep on being a parent even though you dont get to have a child anymore.

This funny-maudlin tribute to Mr. Monteith wont please everyone, but no one can accuse the show of crass exploitation.

As usual, Sue (Jane Lynch), the acid-tongued cheerleading coach whos now the principal, says it best.

In one scene she snaps at the teachers to stop wallowing in their grief. They can best pay tribute to Finn, Sue says, by not making a self-serving spectacle of our own sadness.

Loew Cornell 1021093 Simply Art Acrylic Paint Customer Reviews

Loew Cornell 1021093 Simply Art Acrylic Paint Customer ReviewsI purchased this product with the intention of using it to paint pumpkins with my 3 year old. Although the selection and size are good there were 6 out of the 12 paints that were unusable. After opening the tube it took great effort to squeeze maybe a pin size amount of paint out. Because of the force it took to squeeze the tube, it opened the opposite end making the paint not usable. For 7 dollars there was only 6 tubes that we were able to use. Very upsetting.

Was a little skeptical at first because of the price, but once i got them (came in 2 days, which surprised me) and used them i was very pleased. Will definitely buy again when these run out

Michael Harding 40-Milliliter Tube Oil Paint, Ivory Black Recent Review

Michael Harding 40-Milliliter Tube Oil Paint, Ivory Black Recent ReviewI've been using artist oil paints from Gamblin, Winsor & Newton, and Grumbacher; but decided to try oils from other premium manufacturers as I add/replace colors. The Michael Harding Ivory Black artist oil is very nice and has a high pigment load with what seems like a minimum of oil as binder. Everyone has their own preferences for consistency of oil paints, but I usually prefer a creamier consistency to my oils straight from the tube. I guess it is because of the decreased oil. The flow turned out great though once I added a bit of medium to the paint. Will probably buy again.

I had to use a little Teflon* plumber's tape to keep it from leaking at the threads, but that's not unusual and with that done, these connectors all fit perfectly into my female QD/MAC connector (purchased separately) and did not leak at all.* Yes, I know that DuPont (who owns the word "Teflon") has never made Teflon tape and that nobody else can produce a product called "Teflon tape" -- but c'mon... at least colloquially it's called Teflon tape.

American Easel Deluxe Paint Station-Natural Fir Purchaser Reviews

American Easel Deluxe Paint Station-Natural Fir Purchaser Reviews
Not bad quality at all, i'm just a person who loves to note high quality materials. It is decent quality, but I absolutely love the design. Where everything is and how comfortable it feels to paint, it makes me enjoy the painting experience so much more!!!
- mltb300

I was looking for an easel that would take the pressure of the wet-on-wet technique with larger canvasses. I have not been disappointed with this offering. Let's take a closer look.Price: American Easel charges $300 for this station, and when I purchased mine, with was less than 1/2 that amount. Value is certainly there. Amazon gets a score of 100% on the pricing.Assembly: Parts arrived in a box and was well packed. It took me several minutes to unpack and layout the parts; no problem there. All fasteners were easy to identify and no tools were needed for assembly since either knobs or wing nuts were used. I was surprised that not all parts needed to be assembled as many of the major parts were pre-assembled. The directions were thorough, but needs more and larger pictures for reference. The written were easy to follow, but I did have to reference the pictures on the box for the upper assembly to figure out how the mast holder was attached. I give American Easel a 90% on this for lack of detailed and larger pictures in the directions with easy assembly.Use: The shelves do come in handy but I find the lower shelf out of reach for painting at the moment but good for storage. The upper shelf works will during painting, but the upper mast tends to get in the way a bit and if you have your canvas set low on the mast. You do have to work around this, but it's more of a minor convenience that a major problem. It's foot print is small on the floor, so you don't need a lot of floor space. However, it it very tall at almost 6-1/2 feet. It hold canvasses well, but I find the upturned canvas holder "lip" a bit of an inconvenience...should be trimmed off. This lip is across the front of the canvas holders and can block your painting...minor inconvenience. With the use of strategic plastic knobs, adjustments are easy. The entire upper easel can be removed, the top removed for ease of movement. In fact, the upper easel can be used as a table top, but does need some type of rubber feet for grip. Since I don't use it off of the stand, not a problem. The towel holder is not greatest. I had to add a rubber band to hold the dowel rod in place. This is a minor inconvenience, but certainly not a deal breaker. In fact, it's location is ideal. Grade: 90%Overall this easel is certainly worth a 2nd look if you are wanting something that is sturdy. It is NOT portable and is more of a permanent easel, so if space and transportation isn't an issue, then this is an easel for you. I was looking at the Bob Ross model and this one, what steered me in this direction was the price. I was pleasantly surprised by it's overall ease of assembly and how sturdy the unit is. The only reason is got a 4 out of 5 was for lack of pictures on the directions and for a few minor inconveniences. Other than it's minor shortcomings, I recommend this for any artist. PS...if don't like to stand, invest in an adjustable bar stool. It works will with one.
- Eric Wrana

I ordered this for my wife. It was a little bit of a hassle to put together but the instructions were decent and all the parts were there. It is much sturdier than the old easel that it is replacing. So far, my wife really likes it. Her one gripe is the placement of the paper towel holder on the front. She says that it should have been placed in a spot that was more out of the way.Not a GREAT value for the price, but a good option compared to what was available locally. Amazon made the decision a lot easier when I decided to use the Amazon Prime trial to get free shipping. That saved me around $30 in shipping. We ended up keeping the Prime service after the free trial and paying the annual fee for the student version. Free shipping is nice!
- Kayak Carrier

This is all the easel/ painting aid any one person will ever want at home. It has a shelf under canvas vise for you to place anything you desire. I don't know how I got by without this before...actually I smeared a bunch of paint everywhere.Five stars...atta boy American Easel.
- CkWebb

Very satisfied. Seems lightweight, but sturdy. Went together very easily. Didn't do 5 stars since I haven't painted on it yet. But it looks very promising The mast is adjustable for horizontal or vertical and can hold a fairly large canvas.

Prang Brush Pens, Set of 6 Markers, Assorted Metallic Colors (80002) Recent Reviews
My kids just love it! It is shiny and beautiful, long lasting colors. Very good for arts and crafts activites. I will buy some more later on this year that is for sure.
- Ayelet

Kids love these and so do I! The brush tips are fairly fragile, though, and my 4yo has a tendency to push on them too hard. Probably best for kids age 5+.
- Emily Moothart

These markers run out of ink quickly. Not of a very good quality. Bought for use in high school art class, will be replacing them soon.
- Jody Stapel

My 4 yr. old GD loves to paint and these pens are perfect for her. I would recommend these wholeheartedly.
- T. Bell "T. Bell"

Same as the other Prang set of pens we bought for Christmas, one of the pens was dried out before we used it. So of the two Prang pen sets we bought, both had bung pens. Not a good hit rate Prang.
- Patty "PJAGS"

These pens work great. There is never a void in writing (unless the pen runs out of ink). Very smooth writing, great for scrapbooking and journaling.

Dario Franchitti will have second surgery

Jeff Olson, Special for USA TODAY Sports 6:50 p.m. EDT October 7, 2013

Story Highlights
  • Franchitti will be moved to Indianapolis in a few days
  • He had surgery to repair a broken right ankle Sunday night
  • Fifteen people were injured in the crash

Dario Franchitti is recovering in a Houston hospital Monday after surgery to temporarily stabilize a broken right ankle sustained during a violent crash Sunday during an IndyCar street race.

"Thank you to everyone for all the well wishes," Franchitti said in a statement released by Target Chip Ganassi Racing. "They mean a lot to me."

FRANCHITTI: Injured in scary crash in Houston

Target Chip Ganassi Racing spokesman Kelby Krauss said Monday that Franchitti will undergo a second surgery on his ankle once he is transferred to Indianapolis, but that could be "within a few days."

Franchitti also sustained two spinal fractures and a concussion in the crash on the final lap of the Grand Prix of Houston. His car went airborne and struck a catchfence, sending portions of the fence and other debris into a grandstand, injuring an IndyCar official and 13 fans.

Two of the fans were taken to a hospital for treatment; others were treated at the scene and released. Franchitti was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, where he underwent surgery Sunday night.

"I would also like to send my best to all the fans involved in the accident and hope that everyone is alright," Franchitti said in the statement.

Franchitti's Ganassi Racing teammate Scott Dixon visited one of the injured fans in the hospital with reigning Indianapolis 500 winner Tony Kanaan, who shared a photo on his Twitter handle @TonyKanaan.

Franchitti's brother Marino, a driver in the American Le Mans Series who has been with him at the hospital, tweeted: "Can't thank you all enough for all the wishes & support. @dariofranchitti is doing well considering, recovery starts here.."

Actress Ashley Judd, who married Franchitti in 2001 though the pair announced their separation earlier this year, tweeted Sunday afternoon that she and their dogs were on the way to Houston. Monday, Judd tweeted she was "Amazed by the incredible outpouring of care & prayers" and that they're "Keeping our heads down here & doing what's in front of us to do."

IndyCar released a statement Monday afternoon on the last-lap crash:

"Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by yesterday's accident. Thank you to the people of Houston for their support of the Grand Prix and their concern for Dario Franchitti, the fans and race personnel. INDYCAR is thoroughly reviewing the incident. Reducing the risks that are associated with racing is one of our highest priorities and receives our constant and on-going focus."

RAHAL: Franchitti wreck reminds him of Wheldon

Franchitti also suffered a broken back in a motorcycle crash in 2003 that shortened his first season with then-Andretti Green Racing.

That injury required surgery. Franchitti returned for a full season in 2004, winning two races.

Franchitti won four consecutive IndyCar titles from 2007-11.

Franchitti's car became airborne as he tried to pass Takuma Sato on a fast portion of the course in Turn 5. The car went airborne and tore into fencing, which held. His No. 10 Honda came to rest back on the temporary street circuit around Reliant Park with the front end missing but with the tub portion of the chassis intact. E.J. Viso was also caught up in the crash.

Viso and Sato climbed from their cars unharmed.

Franchitti could be seen moving shortly after the car came to rest. At one point, he lifted his helmet's visor and appeared to be removing his gloves.

Later, team owner Chip Ganassi told USA TODAY Sports' Curt Cavin he asked the 40-year-old Scotsman about his condition before being loaded into an ambulance.

Ganassi said Franchitti responded: "I don't know."

The accident occurred just 10 days shy of the two-year anniversary of the death of Dan Wheldon, who died when his head struck a post at Las Vegas Motor Speedway after his car sailed 325 feet through the air in a fiery 15-car wreck that caused the race's cancellation.

"To be totally honest, when I came up on it I had a flashback to Vegas, but on a smaller scale," Rahal told USA TODAY Sports on Sunday after the race. "When I came through there, the amount of carbon fiber and debris was mind-boggling. I was just hoping everyone was OK at that point. There were parts and pieces everywhere."

Dixon, who took over the IndyCar Series points lead after a second-place finish in Sunday's race, was close friends with Wheldon.

He told USA TODAY Sports after the race the crash sites in Las Vegas and Houston were similar.

"It's the smells and the visuals," Dixon said. "There was nowhere near the amount of damage that we saw (in Las Vegas), but seeing the replay, I think, was the big shock."

Rodale Books Bird-by-Bird Gardening Shopper Reviews

Rodale Books Bird-by-Bird Gardening Shopper Reviews
I really like the concept of this book. Very few of my gardening for birds books are set up by the "how to attract birds by bird family" groupings. I wish it had a little more substance though. The first section contains three chapters with some general overview information on how the bird families are divided up, basics of bird needs, general thoughts on habitats, etc.The second section features chapters on the general bird families which include: woodpeckers, flycatchers, vireos, crows/jays; swallows; chickadee/titmouse; nuthatch; wren; kinglet; thrush; mimic thrush; waxwing; warbler; tanager; large finch; small finch; blackbird/oriole; hummingbird; gallinaceous (quail, bobowhite, etc.).Each family chapter includes an overview of the bird family, a brief summary of their range and habits, the plants they eat, a suggested mini garden bed plan designed to attract them, information on their eating habits, and a chart of the top few plants to attract them. It also includes brief paragraphs on their backyard fare, feeder foods, water preferences, and nesting needs. The third section covers the seasonal aspects of bird watching - noting general migration habits, overwintering, etc.The back has a chapter of resources for things like feeders, birdbaths, plants etc.Overall I don't think it was anywhere near as bad a book as some of the other reviews imply, but I will say it didn't have as much meat as I had hoped it would have. I also agree with the comment that mapped bird ranges would have been more useful. Plant lists are somewhat skimpy (except hummingbirds - that one is pretty extensive).I felt like I learned a good amount about each of the families and that was good (and educational). I didn't really feel like I learned a lot about how to attract them to my yard in particular. The book was well written and easy/interesting to read. So, I would say it is an interesting book to add to your bird knowledge library, but it doesn't really meet its objective of showing you how to attract particular families of birds to your yard.
- MsMarieH

I just started reading Sally's book, one of which I should have written myself, but am delighted in the way she has designed this topic. As a person with a forestry background, I have long advocated that the birds represent the plant community, however indirectly. That said, once one gets the needs of a particular species, which has been well brought about by the endangered species advocates, then a landowner can tailor approaches with managing property in order to attract those birds. Other wildlife is benefitted, too, but we do concentrate on birdlife. So, this a two pronged effort: pay attention to the plant associations, and then realize the wildlife management aspects resulting. Each of us can be an earth citizen, making a vital contribution on one's own land. I have a radio show and weekly newspaper column here in NH, "COUNTRY ECOLOGY" where I pursue these ecological profiles and whatever one can do to make things prosper. I formerly built over 11,000 bark-faced natural birdhouses during 14 years in that business, and was on the board of directors for NABS. I take care of two UNH natural areas on Squam Lake, where "On Golden Pond" was filmed years ago.
- David L. Eastman "DAVE EASTMAN, OL 23,-24"

I agree with the reviewer who said this book is of little use to anyone who knows much at all about birds. When I wasn't wanting to toss the book across the room because I was sick of the idiotic comparisons (sorting birds is like sorting socks, et al) I was saying to myself "no kidding."Plant sunflowers for birds. Plant tubular flowers for hummingbirds. There, I just saved you about $25 and a couple hours. Thank me by not supporting this author by buying this garbage. She also makes no mention of the fact that you can plant all the aforementioned goo you want but still some birds WON'T come to your yard. Why? They don't come to your part of the country. Other than hummingbirds, which the author list what hummers can be found where, the author makes little to no mention of the fact that some birds are rare to never seen in some parts of the country, plentiful in other parts. I really don't know how this author got this book sold because it lacks facts, research and anything else that makes it helpful for anyone other than readers who don't know that most all birds eat sunflower seeds. And if you don't know that, you probably can't read in the first place.
- J. Green "nose4news"

This book is exactly what I was looking for -- an engaging, practical description of how to attract specific birds to my garden. It sets the context for understanding what birds are attract to what foods and how you should arrange your garden to maximum effect. If you're eager to take immediate steps to increase the number and variety of birds in your garden then this is the book for you! I've already given it as a gift to several backyard birder friends.
- SKip

This is a gardening book describing what to plant to attract specific birds. Previously, I had seen lists of plants that the home gardener can grow to attract birds in general, but this book is different since it tells WHICH plants attract WHICH birds. The majority of the book is divided into chapters where various bird groups and their needs are discussed. I was keenly interested in what was said in the chapter for crows since we had serious problems with them in the past. Now I realize I was attracting them by planting corn and sunflowers. Since I can easily live without those plants, good-bye crows.Since we will be re-landscaping soon, I read this to see if my newly proposed planting would attract birds and what kind they would be. With some minor changes in my plants, I could probably attract newcomers to our yard. But after some research to see if those unfamiliar plants would grow in my area, I found they wouldn't.Then I came to the last chapter called "Regional Delights" (p. 356) where it discusses which birds can be found in each part of the country. Now, why wasn't this discussed at the beginning of the book so the reader would only need to look up birds that are in their region? I suggest that new readers check out this section first. If a new edition comes out, this section should be expanded with maps, as another reviewer suggested, and be moved towards the front.Thank you, Sally Roth, for all the effort it took to collect and organize the information in this book.
- Searcher

I found this book to be of little use to anyone other than those just beginning to be interested in birding. Many of the chapters could be combined into simply a chapter entitled how to attract birds. Many are repeates. This book is also seriously lacking in usable pictures of many of the birds that it discusses.
- Big Red

I thought this book was great! I am primarily a gardener, and getting in to birding as a result of all I'm doing in the yard. This book was excellent because for each type of bird, it told you what plants you could plant in your yard to attract them, what plants they would eat, if they would be likely to nest in your yard, what kind of plants they require for nesting, what the nest would look like, and what other kinds of general habitat they might like. I really had never thought about how birds need places to hide from predators, not just places to get food and have nests. It also had information like what kind of foods each bird likes, if you want to put out feeders, and what kind of feeders (if any) each kind of bird might be attracted to.It's not really a bird reference, this is more a gardening reference to attract birds. It does a very good job of giving you specific plant ideas for any kind of bird that you want to attract - I find that picking out specifics is often the hardest part! The only thing I wish this book did differently is to not include invasive plants, even if they aren't invasive all over the US. There are several plants in here that are causing significant habitat problems in Massachusetts, even though in other regions in the US they aren't such a problem. Fortunately, she does call out each plant that she mentions that could fall into that category, so you will know. I just wish they weren't mentioned at all!
- P. Callaway

My husband really likes this book and it is just what he wanted and will use again angain it was sent in record time so thanks
- Genevieve M. Sexton "concerned gen"

Lots of great color pictures and the food likes for each bird and what to grow in your garden to satisfy them
- Lawrence P. Merkel "LPGM"

I am baffled by the negative reviews about this book. It is an extremely useful reference if you want concrete ideas about establishing a bird-friendly garden. We are landscaping our yard from scratch after a major renovation to our house, and this book is exactly what I was looking for. As a couple of the reviewers mentioned, this is NOT a bird identification book, which is fine with me because there are zillions of those books out there. Instead, this is a gardening book. The author devotes a chapter to each of the most common bird families, gives some basic information about the natural habits and preferences of each family, and then presents an actual garden plan (with sketch) to attract members of that family. The garden plans are simple, which is great, and the author also includes a table of other recommended plants and their use for birds (food, shelter, etc.) The plant lists are not exhaustive, but the garden plans are a terrific starting point. This book is most useful for folks who already know the type of birds they'd like to attract to your garden. If you don't, get yourself a basic bird ID book that gives a list of local inhabitants in your area, and then use the BIrd-by-Bird Gardening book to figure out how to attract the species of your choice. The author does have a very casual, chatty writing style, which I have to admit gets a bit annoying, but if you ignore that, the book is loaded with great information. The only thing I felt uncomfortable with is that the author takes a somewhat less rigorous approach about the use of invasive plants than is environmentally responsible. Still, she encourages use of native trees and plants in each of her plans, and flags any invasive plants so you can choose not to use them. Overall, this book is great for folks who already have some knowledge about birds, and want specific instructions about what to plant to attract them. Very useful.
